Twist of Autumn in Alaska
Being in Alaska as summer fades into autumn felt like stepping into a vibrant, living painting. I remember the landscape around me transforming into a dazzling mix of cappuccino gold, lilac brown, and deep crimson, as if the flowers were giving one last, spectacular show before the chill of winter starts to set in and daylight hours plunge to 6 hrs a day.
The glaciers, with their stunning blue sheen, provided a breathtaking contrast to the rich autumn colours. It was incredible to see how the warmth of summer and the crispness of autumn created such a dynamic interplay.
One of the coolest things I learned was how people in some Alaskan communities build their homes underground. It fascinated me to see how these subterranean houses, or "earth-sheltered homes," help keep the interiors warm in the freezing winters and cool in the summer. It’s like living in harmony with the environment, using natural insulation to adapt to the harsh climate.
And here’s a fun tidbit: Alaska is home to over 100,000 glaciers! Each one felt like a frozen piece of the state’s immense beauty, making my experience even more unforgettable. The blend of nature’s artistry and innovative living solutions made my time in Alaska truly remarkable.
I have been blessed to visit Alaska a few times, I will say if you have to pick one over the other for a trip of a life time pick Antarctica.
